We Follow a Scarred Captain
"[Jesus] gave hope to the hopeless, comfort to the comfortless,
mercy to those whose hearts and lives were breaking all around
them. He gave them the gift of abundant life and the secret of
happy living through the Beatitudes.
"Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven".
"Blessed are those who mourn, for they shall be comforted".
"Blessed are the meek, for they shall inherit the earth."
"Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness, for
they shall be satisifed".
"Blessed are the merciful, for they shall obtain mercy".
"Blessed are the pure in heart, for they shall see God."
"Blessed are the peacemakers, for they shall be called children of God."
"Blessed are those who are persecuted for righteousness' sake,
for theirs is the kingdom of heaven. Blessed are you when men revile
you and persecute you and say all kinds of evil against you falsely
on my account. Rejoice and be glad, for your reward is great in heaven".
When Jesus spoke those words, was He thinking about His own
persecution that lay ahead? Oh, yes, for surely no one has endured
more persecution than Jesus. Surely we follow a Scarred Captain.
He leads us nowhere that He has not walked himself."
